Carleton was platted in 1872 where three rail lines crossed, and the village still reads that way: a mile of Monroe Street, a grid of older homes near downtown — about one in six built before 1940 — and the 1970s and 80s ranches that make up the biggest share of the village's housing. Ride out past Ash-Carleton Park in any direction and it turns rural fast: homes on acreage along Grafton, Will Carleton, Exeter, and Labo Roads, most of them on septic and well, with a pole barn or a detached shop out back. Ash Township is 86 percent owner-occupied, and the ZIP saw a second building wave in the 2000s that added hundreds of newer homes.
