Monroe was platted in 1817, and it has the housing to prove it. A third of the city's homes were built before 1940 — the Italianate, Victorian, and Craftsman homes of the Old Village and the East Elm–North Macomb district, with their block and stone basements and detached garages off the alley. Another third are the 1940s and 50s bungalows and capes that filled in around Telegraph, Dixie, and South Monroe Street after the war. The rest runs through the 1970s subdivisions to the new-urbanist colonials at Mason Run, which are still being built. The median Monroe home dates from 1953.

The River Raisin floods — the February 2022 ice jam put East Elm and East Front underwater for days, and the city issued another flood warning in January 2024.
